Police search for 6-year-old missing since New Year's Eve

Divers found David Puckett's body around 10 a.m. local time and subsequently ordered the park to shut down.

"Because of our information and our suspicion ... we have informed David's family of what we have found", said Aurora police chief Nick Metz, who at one point in the press conference inadvertently referred to the body as David's before again resuming a stance that the body has not yet been identified.

Metz said bloodhounds looking for the boy didn't get good results but a scent picked up by a specialized dog led to the pond not far from David's home. He noted that over the weekend, volunteers trained in these types of cases searched for David, Jefferson County bloodhounds were utilized, and the Aurora Police Department also obtained help from a Denver Police Department helicopter, the Arapahoe County search and rescue team, and the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office. She asked anyone who finds any evidence that they think could be related to David's disappearance to call police rather than pick items up or post images of them on social media. "At this time, we can not give a positive indication on the child".

"I have the very unfortunate news of letting you know we found the body of what appears to be a child, inside the pond, underneath the ice."

Metz said it could take time to confirm the body's identity.

"And even though we don't have a positive identification yet, they are devastated", Metz said.

Volunteers have begun gathering at Olympic Park to search for the boy in groups.

Metz said several people searched around the pond over the weekend and didn't see any sign that the ice was broken or anybody had fallen in.

A $10,000 reward made possible by the Aurora Police Reward Fund is being offered. Colorado Bureau of Investigation in turn issued an amber alert for the missing Aurora toddler.

David attends Dartmouth Elementary, where he previously wandered away once but was later found.

Crystal Mckoy, a spokesperson for the Aurora Police Department, said there is no foul play suspected at this point.
