NY could move toward free college tuition

The entire plan is expected to cost $163 million per year once it is fully implemented.

The program, which would need legislative approval, would cover both two and four-year colleges, including community colleges. And students from NY families earning up to $80,000 also get grant aid of up to $5,165 from the state's Tuition Assistance Program.

NY could become the next state to offer tuition-free college, reinvigorating a notion that was a key Democratic talking point during the 2016 presidential campaign.

New York's Democratic governor proposed a plan Tuesday to offer free tuition at state colleges and universities for eligible New Yorkers. "It is going to be the first program like it in the United States of America". This includes trying to get the EPA to sign off on a $511 million low-interest loan that would have helped pay to build the bridge (while not enhancing the environment one bit), and directing more than $3 billion in last year's Executive Budget towards roads and bridges (again, to help pay for his new bridge) and not one cent to NYC's mass transit. And New York, like most states, can not operate with a budget deficit. Other details, such as how the program will be funded, are still being worked out, and the proposal must be approved by the state Legislature.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo today revealed a US$10 billion investment plan to upgrade and redevelop John F. Kennedy International Airport.

"While I support helping middle-class families afford the rising cost of a college education, I'm very concerned that this proposal will put an unfair burden on hardworking taxpayers that have paid for Albany's tax-and-spend culture for far too long", Akshar said.

Sanders is a well-known advocate for tackling student debt and making public universities tuition free.
