Recent study: Tapeworm found in United States salmon led to many infections

Continued research on the tapeworms by the Czech Science Foundation, however, has revealed that all cases of Tapeworm infections in Japan, South Korea and the Pacific coast of Russian Federation, including the ones previously thought caused by the more common tapeworm Diphyllobothrium latum, were actually also caused by Japanese tapeworms.

Adalja added that there are also inherent risks when eating uncooked fish or other raw foods, like unpasteurized milk, but the risk is not limited to tapeworm infection as it includes other food borne pathogens such as bacteria, viruses and other parasites. After filleting the musculature into narrow slices, the scientists observed these and the internal organs of each fish under a magnifying glass.

That's the latest warning from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A meter-long "tape-shaped object" later emerged from his anus which turned out to be the parasitic Japanese broad tapeworm.

Be careful when eating raw wild salmon, particularly those caught in Alaska.

"The infections can have a substantial emotional impact on patients and their families", said study author Roman Kuchta, from the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

The salmon are exported on ice, unfrozen, around the world.

According to CDC's study-Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense Tapeworm Larvae in Salmon from North America-there are four Pacific salmon species that are known to carry Japanese tapeworm infections in humans-chum, masu, pink and sockeye.

Before you freak out, it turns out most people who become infected have no symptoms, the CDC says.

In some cases, it is accompanied by abdominal pain, weight loss, diarrhea, and can also lead to deficiency in vitamin B12. These statistics made this Japanese tapeworm the second most common tapeworm to cause infection in humans. In more severe cases, where the infection is larger, intestinal obstructions occur.

"Actually, most of the people who are infected don't have symptoms", Schaffner was quoted as saying. He said talk of "emerging infections" or new infections comes about, in part, because new scientific methods are able to identify them. According to CDC, the parasite can be destroyed when fish is adequately cooked or frozen.

Diphyllobothrium is a species of tapeworm which can cause diphyllobothriasis in humans. "I am sure we will be on the lookout for this kind of tapeworm going forward".
