India Gets Closer To Apple Pact

Calling the National Informatics Centre (NIC) the "technological bridge" of India and the organization that will "lead the way" for Digital India, union minister for electronics and information technology Ravi Shankar Prasad announced several new initiatives including setting up a Government Securities Operation Centre (G-SOC) and a new Data Centre for Cloud in Bhopal.

"We want Apple to set up its manufacturing plant in India".

In a morale booster for technology giant Apple which is seeking incentives to set up a manufacturing unit in India, the government on Wednesday said that it will consider the Cupertino-based company's request with an "open mind".

Apple has sought a tax benefits and other exemptions to set up an iPhone manufacturing facilities in the country and has sent a list of demands to the Indian government in this regard. A production base in India will not only help Apple with a better market, but will also create an euphoria among the Apple lovers. Amid his visit, he met a few government authorities including India's PM Narendra Modi, communicating goals to grow the organization's business in the nation.

"We can bring in global majors such as Apple, which will come together with its entire ecosystem and consider this as a marquee investment", Sundararajan said. Reuters quoted some official saying the government should make policies for the industry, not individual companies. "If we do this, we must see a lot of value addition".

"Apple is coming here because it sees a lucrative market, this is not a favor being done to India", another official was quoted as saying. Apple has reportedly asked for a 15-year waiver in custom duties and labeling relaxation on its products. Currently, India allows phones to import phone that are not older than three years.

Apple also sought a change in rules that would govern how it could import defective iPhones to fix and export them again, a move it said was crucial for it to keep supporting and repairing older models of the iPhone. "The complete process should not require more than thirty minutes".
