Trump Orders New Military Strategy to Defeat ISIS

"This is the plan to defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, in other words ISIS", he said as he signed the order.

But U.S. officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, doubt the country's military will advocate fundamentally changing a key strategy refined during the Obama administration: relying on local forces to do most of the fighting, and dying, in Syria and Iraq.

Donald Trump has ordered his generals and security advisors to deliver him within a month a plan on how to defeat Isis. "The Plan shall include... identification of new coalition partners in the fight against ISIS and policies to empower coalition partners to fight ISIS and its affiliates", Trump said in a memorandum.Last week, General Joe Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said he would present Mattis with options to "accelerate the campaign" against IS. It is understood the two discussed defeating terrorism in Syria and around the world.

Mr Trump and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin agreed during a telephone call to establish "real coordination" against ISIS in Syria, according to the Kremlin.

We ask the Iraqi government to reciprocate to the decision taken by the U.S administration. Anticipating the order, military leaders reportedly have already begun to devise new strategies. Trump had said he would offset the military buildup by eliminating federal waste, fraud and abuse, which politicians have cited for decades as a way to cut spending but that has routinely either been rejected or fallen far short of the goals.

He also appointed Steve Bannon, his top political adviser to the National Security Council.

A senior administration official told reporters that Trump might sign the order-designed to fulfill one of his main campaign pledges-as early today.

The official said the lobbying rules are in keeping with Trump's campaign promise to "drain the swamp", adding that it is "one of the most dramatic ethics reforms in a generation".
