Democrats must filibuster to save our Supreme Court

A Democratic filibuster of President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Judge Neil Gorsuch, would be political insanity, Sen. The two chatted quietly and gave no statements as reporters and photographers were escorted into Schumer's office to photograph them together. José F. Anderson writes that nominees to the Supreme Court should show a capacity for deciding cases that goes beyond the ideology of the president who nominated him or her.

President Trump might be viewed as a wild card in the judicial selection process because his views sometimes diverge from Republican Party orthodoxy.

"Mainstream." We are having a country-wide civics lesson on who is or is not out of our mainstream: Senate Democrats or the Supreme Court nominee Judge Neil Gorsuch. In The Wall Street Journal, Brent Kendall and Jess Bravin report that the judge's "commitment to collegiality and his attentiveness to the judiciary's reputation" will "bring a different dynamic" to the court from that created by the more "confrontational" Justice Antonin Scalia.

And then there's the question of what will happen when and if Trump gets the opportunity to nominate someone to succeed a liberal justice.

Sen. Collins joins opposition to Ed. Secretary nominee
It was the biggest public outcry over an education secretary that Kusler has seen in her career of more than 20 years, she added. With Collins and Murkowski out, it is increasingly unlikely that DeVos will be confirmed by the Senate if Alabama Sen.

Trump reiterates United States support for Turkey in call with Erdoğan
Erdogan also complained that the the past showed little support for the campaign against the Islamic State. The SDF is an alliance of US backed militias tasked to fight Islamic State in the area.

Iran Defies Trump Administration, Tests Missile Capable of Nuclear Payload
Iran Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan later defended the test in comments Wednesday, claiming it did not violate the resolution. A UN Security Council resolution bans Iran from developing missiles that can carry nuclear warheads.

Given Trump's attacks on judges both on the campaign trail and as President, the Democratic leader said "the bar for a Supreme Court nominee to prove that he can be independent has never been higher". It's about a bumpkin who finds himself appointed to a vacant seat in the U.S. Senate by political bosses who hope to take advantage of his naivete.

The class action waiver dispute, one of the biggest business cases before the high court, could potentially divide the court, meaning Gorsuch could cast the decisive vote. Jeff Sessions is installed as US attorney general. It is interesting to observe that Judge Gorsuch's mother, the late Anne Burford Gorsuch, was a very controversial EPA Administrator under President Ronald Reagan. "Because this is a lifetime appointment, this is as big as it gets". The previous administration put forward Judge Merrick Garland as a possible successor to Justice Scalia but in an unprecedented move, Senate Republicans refused to even consider President Obama's nominee.

In his 2010 book "The Decline and Fall of the American Republic", Sterling Professor of Law and Political Science Bruce Ackerman predicted that the president would be changed "from an 18th-century notable to a 19th-century party magnate to a 20th-century tribune to a 21st-century demagogue", noted a February 4 article in The Economist. Democrats and Republicans agree - 46 percent and 47 percent, respectively - that he will make the Supreme Court more conservative, though about 20 percent of partisans say his presence on the court would leave it unchanged.
