Carmelo Anthony Treatment by Phil Jackson May Impact Knicks in Free Agency

Carmelo Anthony has told confidants he may decide to wait out Phil Jackson and not waive his no-trade clause ahead of the February 23rd deadline. He probably hoped that this would further crush Anthony's spirit to the point he would want to leave and waive his no-trade clause.

Jackson took to Twitter to take another swipe at Anthony, who was criticized by Kevin Ding of Bleacher Report for not having the desire to win. All along, he has said that his hope was to win in NY - not leave to try elsewhere.

Jackson did in fact ignite a firestorm Tuesday when he seemed to endorse a Bleacher Report column that skewered Anthony, calling him "nothing near [Michael] Jordan or [Kobe] Bryant in will to win".

Jackson is 71 and both the New York Knicks and Jackson have an opt-out clause for 17-18. Jackson also compared Melo to a career journeyman in Graham, who played for Phil Jackson in the Continental Basketball League in the 1980s.

So based on all of this, Jackson knew he couldn't fundamentally change the kind of player Carmelo Anthony is despite the claim from Ding to the contrary. The New York Knicks trailed the Cleveland Cavaliers 87-54 as the third quarter stretched to a close.

Anthony and Knicks front office have not been on the best terms lately. It's too bad Phil couldn't have avoided pissing Melo off in the process of attempting to trade him.

Frank Isola of The New York Daily News reported that LeBron James was pushing the Cavs to make a deal for Anthony.

Maybe he did, but when you make so many mistakes against a team like City you simply have no chance. Now they are in a good moment, won three of the last four but is also the way they play.

Anthony says he is trying to stay positive through all the trade rumor noise. So let's break down what he's saying, and why despite not mentioning him, this tweet is about Anthony. Coach Jeff Hornacek acknowledged it may have been a distraction but one he expected the Knicks to play through, and they had a chance to tie before Anthony missed a 3-pointer down 118-115.

As of today, none of the teams linked to the Knicks feel like they have any traction on a deal, according to sources near each team, mainly because any deal would have to be approved by Anthony himself and the Knicks have yet to bring a deal to him to approve.

Anthony has tried to maintain a focus on turning around the Knicks and getting them back to the playoffs.

The Knicks reportedly have spoken to the Cavaliers, Clippers and Celtics about Anthony.

Right now Anthony's trade value is still high.

So last summer, Jackson very almost started from scratch, with cornerstones Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis anchoring a mostly new roster that included five new pieces in the front court and just as many in the backcourt at the start of this season.
