Nassau County remains under a winter storm warning from midnight to 6 p.m. Thursday, but it's now expected to see eight to 12 inches of snow.

The Philadelphia International Airport also began cancelling flights mid-day Wednesday. In other words, even though annual snowfall has trended downward in many areas, the snow that does fall tends to come in bigger installments.

At major airports stretching from Philadelphia to Boston, hundreds of inbound and outbound flights were grounded Thursday and more cancellations were expected.

"I don't like coming out in this weather but I have three kids going to school and I have to work", Hassan said as he prepared for the two-hour trip back to his home in Parsippany, New Jersey.

Snow is falling on the Philadelphia region and a snow emergency has been declared, although accumulations are not expected to exceed 5 inches.

A blizzard warning has been issued for Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket in MA, as well as eastern and central Long Island in NY.

The stormy weather and cold air are a far cry from what New Jersey experienced on Wednesday, when temperatures soared into the low 60s across Central Jersey and hit the low 70s in South Jersey.

Winter Storm Niko packed a punch when it hit the Northeast Thursday morning and has continued its massive snowfall throughout the day.

"Those are conditions that are just not possible to be driving in", Steven Bellone, a Suffolk County executive on Long Island, said.

According to Eversource, the areas most affected include communities on Cape Cod, including Barnstable with 10,271 outages and Yarmouth with 13,842 outages as of 4:50 p.m.

Forecasters warned drivers to stay off the roads, except in case of emergency.

Winter storm warnings have been posted for large swathes of the Northeast from Pennsylvania to New England with most airlines issuing change fee waivers.

Some areas of the Northeast have been enjoying a mostly snow-free winter, but that's about to change.

A New York City doorman died while shoveling snow, Governor Andrew Cuomo said.

Like many school districts throughout the state, almost all schools in eastern MA - including Boston, Cambridge and Somerville schools - are closed. "When it comes down at 2 to 3 inches per hour it's hard for the plows to keep up", said Alan Dunham, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Taunton, Massachusetts.
