Yale students protest college named after proponent of slavery

President of Yale University Peter Salovey, announced the decision and said, "We have a strong presumption against renaming buildings on this campus".

Calhoun, a senator from SC who was separately secretary of state, secretary of war and vice-president under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson, was a champion of "states' rights" in the years before the civil war.

In Calhoun's place, the dormitory will be now be named for Grace Murray Hopper, a computer scientist who received two mathematics degrees from Yale in the 1930s.

After decades of protests, Yale University announced that it will change the name of Calhoun College, named after John Calhoun, a Yale valedictorian-turned-politician from SC and a white supremacist who promoted slavery.

Yale previously said it wouldn't rename Calhoun College, a decision that sparked a massive debate and led to a student protest in 2015.

The president said changing the college's name to honor Hopper was a popular suggestion.

By the beginning of the next academic year, the name of alumna Grace Murray Hopper will be added to the building, and the residential college will be known by that name.

After a protracted battle, Yale's Calhoun College will finally - officially - be renamed to honor a military veteran.

Mark Moore, formerly with Langley Research Center, published a white paper on vertical takeoff and landing, or VTOL, in 2010. If Uber has anything to do with it, that will one day be a reasonable request.

There are also plans to radically increase brownfield development and to bring life back to abandoned sites in town centres. Mr Javid said: "With prices continuing to sky rocket, if we don't act now, a whole generation could be left behind".

The event was pretty civil, which was a concern for both sides due to the passion felt by people on both sides of the issue. USA Today reported on January 17 that Planned Parenthood received $553.7 million in government funding in 2014.

"People of good will and intelligence have many different perspectives on this question", Salovey said.

He said the name change is not about taking an eraser to the school's history.

Since then, a couple protests have popped as recent as Friday calling on Yale to change the name of Calhoun College. "Calhoun's principles, his legacy as an ardent supporter of slavery as a positive good, are at odds with this university".

A portrait of John C. Calhoun, the 7th vice president of the United States of America, hangs along a wall in the Senate Reception Room, one of the Capitol's most richly decorated public rooms.

Yale University announced it's renaming the residential college.

This will be the second residence hall named for a woman at Yale. He also held positions of secretary of state, secretary of war and a senator.

Last year, an African-American dishwasher admitted to breaking a stained-glass window that depicted slaves picking cotton. The working, Corey Menafee, was arrested though Yale did not press charges. She graduated from Yale in 1930 and earned a doctorate in mathematics and mathematical physics from there in 1934, just a year after Calhoun College was established.

Salovey had previously been against renaming the college because of the message about slavery he said it sent both the university and the nation.
