Here's how Verizon's new unlimited data plan compares to the competition

In a move to compete with rival wireless providers, Verizon Wireless has finally unveiled an unlimited data plan for $80 a month. Interestingly, Verizon has chosen to include line access in these quotes, perhaps inspired by a recent move from T-Mobile to simplify billing by including all fees in its quoted prices.

The plan is called Verizon Unlimited and it brings HD streaming, mobile hotspot, texting to Mexico and Canada, and up to 500MB of data roaming per day.

T-Mobile shares fell 2.8 percent in early afternoon trading on Nasdaq. This is the biggest caveat of Verizon's fine print, as it means that your data isn't truly unlimited - like T-Mobile and Sprint, Verizon is reserving the right to slow you down if it determines you're using too much data. Four lines cost $160, with additional users adding $20 each, up to eight users. Right on top of that, the Un-carrier introduced a new offer of two lines on T-Mobile ONE for just $100.

"We've built our network so we can manage all the activity customers undertake", said Ronan Dunne, president of Verizon's wireless division. We've asked the company if it plans to change that Friday and will provide an update if we get one. To make the offer even more enticing, the wireless company will give customers making the switch a free iPhone 7 - among other comparable smartphones - when they trade in an eligible device.

AT&T now only sells unlimited data plans to customers who also subscribe to the company's DirecTV or U-Verse TV service. As we outlined earlier today, T-Mobile's plans are significantly cheaper, especially if you have a couple lines. If you leave Verizon before two years are up, you will have to pay a pro-rated portion of the phone's price.

Verizon says that after your account hits 22GB in usage each month, it may throttle your speeds so other customers get prioritization during peak times. It will be interesting to see if AT&T follows suit - at the moment, their unlimited plan is only available to customers who bundle it with their satellite/TV services. However, to get unlimited data with AT&T you also have to be a DirecTV subscriber.
