Iranian Speaker Congratulates New German President

Germany's new president Frank-Walter Steinmeier has urged his country to shake off decades of post-war insecurity and embrace its new role as an "anchor of hope" in a stormy world.

During a Sunday vote of 1,260 members of parliament, Steinmeier won a clear majority of 923 seats.

"I wholeheartedly congratulate you on the occasion of your election as President of the Federal Republic of Germany", said President Aliyev in his letter.

During his campaign from a year ago, Steinmeier was one of his toughest critics.

Since Mr Schulz took over the candidacy in late January, the SPD has risen sharply in the opinion polls.

The president used to be a foreign minister and is very popular.

He said the world faces "rough times", but that Germany, as a functioning democracy, had the responsibility to fight for stability. Two main parties in the coalition hold 923 seats in the assembly, which should assure Steinmeier's election.

Aware they are heading into election season with that open flank, Dr Merkel's CDU has vowed to switch from co-habitation to attack mode against its SPD grand coalition partners this morning. And in 2007, he was appointed vice chancellor in the grand coalition.
