Iranian Speaker Congratulates New German President

The Federal Assembly, a constitutionally mandated body made up of lawmakers from the lower house and party representatives from the German states, convened in Berlin.

Germany's new president Frank-Walter Steinmeier has urged his country to shake off decades of post-war insecurity and embrace its new role as an "anchor of hope" in a stormy world.

During a Sunday vote of 1,260 members of parliament, Steinmeier won a clear majority of 923 seats.

"I wholeheartedly congratulate you on the occasion of your election as President of the Federal Republic of Germany", said President Aliyev in his letter.

During his campaign from a year ago, Steinmeier was one of his toughest critics.

Aware they are heading into election season with that open flank, Dr Merkel's CDU has vowed to switch from co-habitation to attack mode against its SPD grand coalition partners this morning. And in 2007, he was appointed vice chancellor in the grand coalition.
