Jaguars, Dolphins Close To Trading Julius Thomas For Branden Albert

A potential trade between the Jaguars and Miami Dolphins hit another stage this morning when a team source confirmed an NFL.com report that left tackle Branden Albert was visiting EverBank Field.

He has still failed to play more than 14 games in any of his first six National Football League seasons, but 2016 was particularly trying as he appeared in just nine games and pulling in just 30 receptions for 281 yards and four touchdowns. That appeared to be the case for Julius Thomas, who was reportedly going to be traded to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for Branden Albert before a report Monday indicated that wouldn't be happening.

Albert enters the second to a year ago of his contract and will carry a $10.6 million cap hit for Jacksonville. The deal cannot be official until the start of the league new year on March 9th.

A deal reportedly may require both Albert and Thomas to rework their current contacts, but what was expected to be the biggest hurdle apparently is no longer in the way.

The Miami Dolphins and Jacksonville Jaguars are engaging in trade discussions, opening the door for an offseason of change in the NFL.

The Dolphins will clear $7.2 million in salary cap space once Albert's trade to Jacksonville is finalized, giving them roughly $50 million available. The report said there are complications to overcome for this deal to work. "It's the business of the game". He signed a five-year, $46 million contract with the Jaguars before the 2015 season and is set to earn more than $8 million in 2017. Gase's two-year stint with Thomas led to the tight end's top two seasons of his career.

Thomas has caught 76 receptions for 736 receiving yards and nine touchdowns in two seasons with the Jaguars.

That was clearly evident this past season as the season went on the worse Albert got.

The move reunites Thomas with his former offensive coordinator, who now happens to be his head coach in Adam Gase.
