Trade Reaction: Rockets Receive Lou Williams From Lakers

The Lakers are finalizing a trade to send guard Lou Williams to the Houston Rockets, league sources tell @TheVertical.

The Lakers are sending Lou Williams to the Rockets in exchange for Corey Brewer and a first-round pick.

Magic Johnson took over as President of Basketball Operations of the Los Angeles Lakers earlier today, and isn't wasting any time in reshaping Los Angeles' roster. Getting Houston's first-round pick was a solid B+, taking on Brewer (there wasn't a team that would provide a better salary-match player?) gets a D - let's split the difference. Despite coming off the bench, he leads the team in scoring, averaging a career high 18.6 points per game, shooting 44.4 percent from the field, and 38.5 percent from 3. However, a previous late first round pick acquired from Houston in the Jeremy Lin trade turned into Larry Nance Jr., so LA should have confidence that its scouting department can find a hidden gem in the draft. But if there a team that needs to think about things before acting the most, that would probably be the Los Angeles Lakers. In addition, the transaction will allow Williams to capitalize on his offensive firepower for a playoff contender as opposed to a tanking team in need of keeping its lottery pick. This season Williams has a 5.6 offensive box plus-minus and 4.24 offensive real plus-minus (good for first in the league among shooting guards if you classify Harden as a point guard). Williams is in the second year of his three-year, $21 million deal.

Which team besides the Wizards are being said to be interested in a Lakers trade for the sixth man Williams? It was not a four player transaction, or a trade that is expected to have a massive impact on the Los Angeles Lakers performance. It appears Williams will be able to add to this high-scoring total.

Once the Lakers work out their front office this offseason (they released General Manager Mitch Kupchak on Tuesday), they can really begin to work on what path needs to be taken for them to get back to the playoffs.

Williams also brings with him a manageable contract, and he'll have one more year left on his deal at the conclusion of this season.
