8-year-old girl shot, killed after surviving vehicle crash

An 8-year-old girl was shot to death after a crash on West Fuqua Street near Sam Houston Parkway, police said.

The accident happened at the intersection of W. Fugua and S. Sam Houston Parkway around 3 a.m.

DeMaree Atkins was transported to a local hospital by paramedics, where she was later pronounced dead.

"She was a good girl, honor roll student, full of life".

After the crash, authorities said the driver of the sedan got out of the vehicle and opened fire, hitting Atkins. Thomas said she was unable to slow down in time, and the cars collided with each other.

The white Pontiac that crashed into Thomas' vehicle was left abandoned at the scene of the fatal shooting.
