After Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel announces free roaming on voice calls

For instance, when a customer travelling to America without an worldwide roaming pack and crosses the Rs 649 (the price of the one day pack for USA) limit, he/she will automatically move to the one-day pack with free incoming calls/SMS, 100 India and local country outgoing minutes, 300 MB data and avail other benefits, as well. Additionally, the company says that it will stop asking for premium charges on outgoing calls while roaming.

Mittal's pitch came on a day when Airtel scrapped roaming charges for its Indian consumers, including those on incoming calls, text messages sent and data services.

Not only calls but also SMS will also be roaming free. This is to ensure customers do not suffer from any "bill shocks" the next month, Airtel said. It also added that, "When a customer travelling to the USA without a pack hits the threshold of Rs 649 (the price of one-day pack designated for the country), he/she will automatically move to the one-day pack with free incoming calls/SMS, 100 India and local country outgoing minutes, 300 MB data and a host of other benefits". Also, there will be no additional data charges on national roaming.

Free incoming calls on national roaming were also introduced by Vodafone previous year.

According to the press release by the telecom giant, the company said the move will lead to "death of National Roaming" from April 1.

Bharti Airtel's move to lift roaming charges comes in the wake of vigorous competition in the telecom sector after the entry of Reliance Industries Reliance Jio.

Bharti Airtel on Monday announced changes in its domestic and global roaming plans after Reliance Jio offered free voice calls on its domestic network with no local or roaming charges.

Announcing its decision to end free services to its customers on 31 March, Reliance Industries last week said its subscribers will have to choose its data tariff plans starting 1 April to enjoy seamless services at a much cheaper rate.

This move will benefit its 268 million mobile customers.

"Airtel mobile customers will be able to carry their numbers across India and the world and stay connected all the time without having to worry about high call/data charges".
