Rick Perry Confirmed as Energy Secretary

Don't worry-apparently no one else does, either, and on Thursday Perry was confirmed to become the secretary of the department, because of course he was.

Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) issued the following statement opposing the confirmation of former Texas Governor Rick Perry, President Trump's nominee for U.S. Department of Energy Secretary. "In fact, after being briefed on so numerous vital functions of the Department of Energy, I regret recommending its elimination".

In addition, before the inauguration, Trump's team team circulated a controversial questionnaire among Energy Department employees seeking to identify which workers went to meeting related to climate change.

Perry's failure to remember during a 2011 GOP presidential primary debate that he wanted to eliminate the Energy Department sank his presidential prospects that cycle, but did not factor heavily into his confirmation process.

"Though every Energy Secretary doesn't need to be a brilliant physicist to succeed, the Energy Department deserves a chief executive who genuinely cares about shaping our nation's energy policy and overseeing our nuclear arsenal", said California Democrat Dianne Feinstein, who opposed his nomination.

"The man was born to lead", said U.S. Sen.

But Perry's foes criticized his tepid acknowledgment of climate change, his strong ties to his state's oil and gas industry, and his lack of experience with the department's main budgetary area: the maintenance of the nation's nuclear stockpile.

"The question is how do we address it in a thoughtful way that doesn't compromise economic growth, the affordability of energy, or American job", Perry said.

As governor, Perry presided over a boom in energy production, including wind power and shale drilling.

"President Trump called you to this role to serve as the 14th Secretary of Energy because of who you are because of what you've done".
