Wildfires destroy almost 1 mIllion acres in Kansas, Oklahoma

One of the three apparently died of smoke inhalation Monday night and the other two were badly burned and died on the way to hospitals, he said.

Other wildfires have claimed one life in Kansas and another in Oklahoma.

The Texas A&M Forest Service and the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center forecast that winds, which help stoke the wildfires, will subside on Wednesday.

"These conditions will make it somewhat easier for firefighting efforts, but far from flawless".

Armendariz said that the county will continue to monitor the fire in hopes that it does not cross into New Mexico.

"Really a lot of this most wildfire are human cause, whether equipment and power lines".

Four firefighters were injured while battling the blaze, My High Plains reported.

Department spokeswoman Keli Cain said fires are also reported in Payne, Logan, Mayes, Beckham, Okmulgee, Osage, Stephens, Texas and Woods counties, but no injuries are reported from any fires.

The survivors remember the suddenness of what came upon them: wind, flying sand, the sky glowing suddenly red.

The National Weather Service canceled a critical fire risk warning for the Texas Panhandle into Oklahoma, Kansas and western Missouri it had issued on Wednesday, saying a weak low pressure front was in the area, bringing moisture to the air.

The fourth victim from Texas is Cade Koch (25). A smaller fire to the west, near Amarillo, was fully contained by firefighters Tuesday.

"It doesn't take anything to get a fire going and they're hard to put down".

Numerous wildfires are burning in Oklahoma and evacuations have been ordered in several counties in the state's northwest.

In Oklahoma, the governor's office says 300,000 acres in three counties alone have burned.

The fires have destroyed 30 homes and compromised bridges, Horner said, but it's now at least 50% contained.

The estimated total number of acres burned in the state is approximately 626,000 acres.

The Kansas Division of Emergency Management has deployed their Communications on Wheels vehicles to Reno and Clark Counties to assist with communication with area residents. That fire started in Oklahoma before moving into the Kansas ranching community.
