US Attorney Preet Bharara fired by Trump administration

He went on to say in the tweet that being the US Attorney in the Southern District of NY will "forever be the greatest honor of my professional life".

The order to fire Bharara came down from the president, and Schumer anxious that Trump was "interrupting ongoing cases and investigations and hindering the administration of justice."To further muddy the political waters, the AP reported that Bharara's office is "investigating the financial terms of settlements of sexual-harassment claims against Fox News by its employees". According to Buzzfeed News' Chris Geidner and Zoe Tillman, new presidents tend to replace most United States attorneys, but usually not so quickly, and not before successors have been nominated or confirmed. "They ask for letters of resignation but the attorneys are allowed to stay on the job until their successor is confirmed", the senator said.

Oklahoma Northern District U.S. Attorney Danny Williams Sr., through a spokeswoman, declined to comment, saying he had not received official notification about the resignation request.

President Trump fired a federal prosecutor Saturday who said he wouldn't honor Attorney General Jeff Sessions' request to resign. The former US Attorney wrote that he'd been let go on his Twitter feed, which he only set up two weeks ago, perhaps in anticipation of this very moment.

When he was asked to step down Bharara had been overseeing probes into associates of New York's governor Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, as well as the administration of the city's Democratic mayor, Bill de Blasio.

Bentley has been a popular US attorney whose office has avoided any whiff of scandal during his tenure.

"The way the Obama administration handled it was appropriate and respectful and classy", he said.

"There's a real fire inside of Lee that not everybody sees", Robert O'Neill, former U.S. Attorney in Florida's middle district whose 2013 departure created the vacancy, told the Times when Bentley was appointed 27 months ago. They report to Justice Department leadership in Washington, and their priorities are expected to be in line with those of the attorney general. "It's going to be a one-liner", he added.
