Venezuela rallies past Italy 4-3 to reach 2nd round of WBC

Nobody likes getting sent home via tiebreaker, but as he returned to Los Angeles Dodgers spring-training camp Wednesday, Gonzalez made it clear he was still angry about his country's WBC fate.

"They're trying to be the World Cup", Gonzalez said. "But they're not even the Little League World Series", per McCullough. He's done with the World Baseball Classic. The WBC's tiebreakers don't make much sense, and it seems like Mexico wasn't informed as to what would be specifically required to advance to the second round ahead of its must-win game against Venezuela, per Gonzalez's comments today.

Descalso, the Diamondbacks infielder, finished the day hitting 2-of-3 with a strikeout and a walk in the loss as Italy was eliminated after Venezuela rallied from a 2-1 deficit courtesy a three-run ninth inning.

Mexico believed it had allowed 19 runs over 18 innings played, which would edge out Venezuela's mark. Jair Jurrjens picked up the win after striking out five and holding Israel to one run on five hits over six innings. Mexico was eliminated on a tiebreaker — runs allowed per inning played.

After news trickled out that it was Venezuela, not Mexico, that would advance to Monday night's game, a protest was filed by the Mexican team, but to no avail.

The Dodgers first baseman said he also reached out to MLB officials to complain, and he told the league, "You have no integrity. Everything you guys are doing is a bunch of BS". In fact, he is actually laughing.

Gonzalez will be 38 when the next World Baseball Classic is played in 2021.
