Nicola Sturgeon: Blocking IndyRef2 will destroy United Kingdom unity

Davidson said voting on independence without knowing how Britain was faring outside the European Union would mean that "on the most important decision we can make, we would be voting blind".

Expanding on the themes of her landmark Lancaster House speech in January, the Prime Minister will say her plan has the union at its heart.

On Thursday, May said that people should first learn the results of the Brexit talks before asking for another referendum, stressing that it was not the right time for such a vote to be held.

Mr Brown was the main architect of the "Vow", a promise of more powers for Holyrood, which many believe boosted the No vote ahead of the Scottish independence referendum in September 2014. "We've set out when we think it would be right", Sturgeon said told the BBC. One message from the independence and European Union referendums was that people wanted more control over their lives.

She will insist Scots are "not powerless" and can "still decide which path we take".

The First Minister will say: "Next week. we will ask the Scottish Parliament to agree that the Scottish people should have the right to choose our own future".

'So when the terms of Brexit are known - and not before - we will give the people the choice over the direction Scotland should take - before it is too late to change course'.

Sturgeon will introduce a motion into the Scottish Parliament next week to apply to the legislature in London for a referendum on independence.

Mr Brown will call for the Scottish Parliament to be handed control of £800 million in current European spending and get power to set Value-Added Tax rates, sign worldwide treaties, and control agriculture, fisheries, environmental regulation, employment and energy. At that point a fair, legal, agreed referendum - on a timescale that will allow the people of Scotland an informed choice - ceases to be just my proposal, or that of the SNP.

"It becomes the will of the democratically elected Parliament of Scotland".

She will also offer to compromise on the timing of another referendum, saying she would be "happy" to delay a vote until after the United Kingdom has left the EU.

May said "now is not the time" to reopen Scotland's independence debate, though she did not rule out a referendum in the future.

Mr Robertson, the SNP leader at Westminster, said the prime minister had promised in July of previous year that she would secure a UK-wide approach and agreement with the devolved administrations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland before starting the formal Brexit process by triggering Article 50.

He told presenter John Humphrys: "The PM has the capacity to change her mind".

Gordon Brown is to set out a "third option" for Scotland's future, based on more powers being transferred to Holyrood after Brexit.

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon's plans for a second independence referendum were rejected by May.
