United Nations chief wants report on 'apartheid' Israel taken off web

In a statement sent to the Jordan Times on Saturday, HIMAM said: "The coalition expresses its sorrow and condemnation of the decision of the UN Secretary General to withdraw the report issued by [ESCWA]". In her announcement, Khalaf accused what she called "powerful member states" of using intimidation tactics to force the removal of the report.

When Guterres instructed her on Thursday morning to withdraw the report, Khalaf said, "I asked him to review his position but he insisted on it".

UN Undersecretary General and ESCWA Executive Secretary Rima Khalaf speaks during a news conference announcing her resignation from the United Nations in Beirut, Lebanon, on Friday. "We will continue to remain grateful to Dr. Khalaf for assuming a principled and courageous stand on behalf of the people of Palestine".

"Based on that, I submitted to him my resignation from the United Nations", she said.

United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the report was published without consultation with the U.N. secretariat. "This is about the secretary-general having the authority to manage the organization in a way that is done effectively and can deliver on its goals".

The report was compiled by Richard Falk, a Princeton professor emeritus with a long track record of vehemently anti-Israel rhetoric, who previously was the UN's Special Rapporteur for Human Rights in Palestine, and by Virginia Tilley, an American political scientist who authored the book "The One-State Solution", in 2005.

USA envoy to the UN Nikki Haley, who had demanded the report's withdrawal last week, said in a statement: "When someone issues a false and defamatory report in the name of the United States, it is appropriate that the person resign".

The "incapable of taking a stand" and the debacle over the report proved it can not be counted on "to defend human rights in our region", he said.

US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, reacted to Khalaf's resignation and said it was appropriate, Reuters reported.

"Over the years Khalaf has worked to harm Israel and advocate for the BDS movement", Danon said.

"I asked him to rethink his decision, he insisted, so I submitted my resignation from the United Nations".
