House Intel Seeks Clarity From Comey on Wiretap Claims

A first panel of witnesses will examine the history of Russian influence campaigns and a second panel will address how Russia uses cyber operations to support the activities. The aide said Spicer is wrong.

The tweets remain online, and Trump told Fox News late Wednesday that he was going to produce evidence - eventually. Obama said through a spokesman that it was "simply false".

Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores said in a statement to CNN that the department "has complied with the request from leaders of the House and Senate Intelligence Committees and Judiciary Committees seeking information related to surveillance during the 2016 election".

"The point is, the intelligence committees in their continuing, widening, ongoing investigation of all things Russian Federation, got to the bottom - at least so far - with respect to our intelligence community that - that no such wiretap existed", Ryan told reporters.

The White House appeared to be backing away from Trump's claims on Monday, with spokesman Sean Spicer saying the president was referring to general surveillance that may have been approved by the Obama administration.

Mr Spicer also chastised the media for focusing so much attention on comments disparaging MrTrump's claim about surveillance.

Senator Mark Warner, the committee's Democratic vice chairman, said he had "grave concerns" about the independence of the committee's probe after the report that Burr had helped the White House dispute the stories.

On Wednesday the leaders of the House Intelligence Committee said they have yet to see any evidence of wiretapping, and House Speaker Paul Ryan insisted that "no such wiretap existed".

Trump's unfounded wiretapping allegations have taken a number of turns in the two weeks since the president made the explosive charge.

"Three intelligence sources have informed Fox News that President Obama went outside the chain of command", Spicer read from the Fox News report. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!

Trump's allegations have put him in a potentially perilous position as congressional investigations into Russia's involvement in the 2016 election - and possible Russian contacts with Trump associates - ramp up.

President Donald Trump's controversial allegation that the Obama administration wiretapped his Trump Tower in NY wilted further Thursday when two top USA senators said they saw no evidence to back the claim.

"As I told you last week about the issue with the president talking about tapping Trump Tower, that evidence still remains the same, that we don't have any evidence that that took place", Nunes told reporters.

Instead, Trump, standing alongside German Chancellor Angela Merkel, whose cellphone had been tapped by the Obama administration, said at a news conference: "As far as wiretapping, I guess, by this past administration, at least we have something in common, perhaps".

"But wiretap covers a lot of different things".
