FIFA reveals proposed slots for 48-team 2026 World Cup

World Football's governing body is adapting its qualification procedures to match its expanded 48-team World Cup.

The proposed plan is to give additional slots to each confederation but two could be decided between six teams.

Meanwhile, the host country would also automatically qualify for the FIFA World Cup, and its slot would be taken from the quota of its confederation.

The All Whites have only played in two Fifa World Cups - 1982 and 2010 - but appearances could be more frequent from 2026 with the expansion to 48 teams.

The proposals will be submitted to the FIFA Council at its next full meeting in Bahrain in May for a final decision. The two confederations from the Americas will now receive six entries each with Asia getting eight and Oceania one.

The new 48-team competition has 46 direct slots.
