Mets' Seth Lugo has torn elbow ligament, surgery possible

The New York Mets expect to be without pitcher Seth Lugo for "significant time" because of an elbow injury, per Mike Puma of the New York Post. Adam Wainwright pitched with a torn UCL for six years although he ultimately needed Tommy John surgery, and Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka has avoided surgery while pitching with a tear. Lugo has announced a more proactive approach with his injury, and on Tuesday had a platelet-rich plasma injection in his elbow.

Lefty Steven Matz recently suffered a strained flexor tendon that is expected to keep him sidelined for a while, so the Mets now have a pair of their young hurlers on the shelf for an undetermined period. He was originally diagnosed with arm fatigue, which Lugo himself described as "just a little soreness" that wouldn't last more than a "couple days".

An MRI on Monday revealed the issue in his elbow and he will be unavailable for at least the next two weeks. He maintained that high level into his stint with Puerto Rico during the World Baseball Classic.

Lugo saw action in three WBC games, including getting the start in the final against the United States.

Knicks' Rose injures knee, out for season
Troubled by knee injuries throughout much of his career, Rose averaged 18 points in 64 games in his lone season with the Knicks. Last season saw Rose play in 66 games, his most since 2010-11, but a fractured orbital bone sidelined him for 16 games.

Lugo appeared in 17 games and made eight starts last season.

The health of the Mets' starting rotation continues to deteriorate. But he will not immediately return, as a throwing program and potential rehab starts in the minor leagues will precede his season debut in the Majors. The Mets will look for solid seasons from both.

Right-hander Noah Syndergaard left Monday's opener with a blister on the middle finger of his pitching hand, and his next start will be pushed back a day.

There were no surprises when the Mets set their Opening Day roster Sunday.
