Misbah-ul-Haq retires as Pakistan's most successful captain

Misbah-ul-Haq retires as Pakistan's most successful captain

Asghar and Shadab are yet to play Test cricket for Pakistan, although the latter has made an impressive worldwide debut in the just-concluded T20 series, grabbing 10 wickets in the four-match series that Pakistan won 3-1.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shaharyar Khan has indicated that Test skipper Misbah-ul-Haq could be assigned a directorial role with the cricket board post his retirement. In August past year, Pakistan rose to the No. 1 Test ranking for the first time after drawing the series against England, and Misbah rated this as his best moment.

"There were many hardships in my career but for now I am focusing on the present situation".

Pakistan has not won a test series in the West Indies and that has been taken as a challenge by Misbah in his last worldwide assignment.

The performances were in stark contrast to those during the 3-0 whitewash to Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates last September, when he failed to make an impact with either bat or ball.

Before this, Misbah has captained Pakistan in 53 Test matches and went on to win 24 of them. "I had a dream of winning the World Cup for Pakistan, but then I also had a dream of captaining the team in Pakistan".

The right-handed batsman, who made his first-class debut back in 1998-99 for Sargodha, added that he would continue to play domestic cricket.

Ahmed said Pakistan has a more established test team than the West Indies and conditions in the Caribbean will be more like the UAE, which will help the Pakistan bowlers.

Misbah has led Pakistan with a steely determination and unflappable temperament since 2010 when he was appointed in the wake of the 2010 spot-fixing scandal.

"I think Misbah's time is up", former captain turned commentator Ramiz Raja told APP at the time.

The Pakistan skipper said the series against West Indies will be his last.

"If I perform well and the team doesn't do as well, then it puts a damper on my personal performance and my spirit going forward. You don't get everything you ask for", he said.

Misbah, 42, said a Test series against India would have completed his cricket career.

He is Misbah-ul-Haq. The Zen Master of cricket.

Not only did he have a remarkable 2011 when he could do nothing wrong with his bat, but he eventually ended up leading Pakistan to a remarkable 3-0 victory over No.1 ranked England in early 2012.

But Misbah's batting form dipped dramatically during the Australia tour, scoring only 76 runs in three test matches. "Instead of criticising personalities, it's better if we start talking positively about Pakistan cricket".
