Weather Service counts 17 tornadoes in Louisiana outbreak

An EF0 tornado touched down in the Hickory section Thursday afternoon, the National Weather Service confirms.

So far, 2017 has been a very active year for severe weather across the United States. No deaths or injuries have initially been reported.

A survey showed a twister with top winds of 110 miles per hour touched down just inside Franklin County at 12:57 a.m. "The greatest tornado risk has shifted to the north of the region".

WTVR CBS 6 crews spotted several large uprooted trees - one that almost hit a home.

"And we have reports of homes damaged in Sandbridge in Virginia Beach and we will be going out to survey that tomorrow", says Zimmerman. Thirty other trees were damaged.

Another EF-0 tornado was confirmed near Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in the District of Columbia.

Tornadoes and severe thunderstorms remain possible until 9 p.m. when the Tornado watch for the area expires.

"A few tornadoes likely with a couple intense tornadoes possible", the weather service said.

Some structural damage was also reported at some homes and nearby buildings.

Chatham Emergency Management Agency has issued a severe thunderstorm warning until 12:30 a.m. for Chatham County, according to their Twitter page.

In an alert issued Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service in Wakefield, Va. predicted "hazardous weather" with damaging winds, large hail, and the possibility of isolated tornadoes throughout southeastern Virginia.
