Weekend box office: 'Smurfs: The Lost Village' flops with $14.1 million

After crushing Paramount's Ghost in the Shell with its massive $49 million opening last weekend, The Boss Baby, the animated comedy in which Alec Baldwin voices a baby that also (seemingly) happens to be some sort of business executive, is No. 1 again this weekend after pulling in $26.3 million, enough to bring its domestic total to an impressive $89.4 million. Nabbing an A+ CinemaScore, Case for Christ stars Mike Vogel, Erika Christensen, Faye Dunaway and Robert Forster.

"There are other revenue streams for films like this", Dergarabedian said, noting worldwide profits and home video potential that could recoup production costs. This weekend's openings included a $2.2 million debut in Brazil along with France ($1.9m); Mexico ($1.6m); Germany ($1.5m); and Italy ($1m) Upcoming releases include an April 21 debut in China and an April 28 release in South Korea.

Disney's fourth weekend of "Beauty and the Beast" will finish a close second with about $25.2 million at 4,210 venues in what will be the 10th-highest fourth weekend of all time.

The third installment in Sony's animated series, entitled Smurfs: The Lost Village, took in $14 million (£11.3 million) to finish behind The Boss Baby and Beauty And The Beast. Forecasts ranged from $14.5 million at BoxOfficePro to $19.1 million at Hollywood Stock Exchange.

Featuring the voices of Demi Lovato and Joe Manganiello as the little blue Smurfs, it did far better in the rest of the world where it picked up $42 million for a total just over $56 million. Critics gave the movie just 35 percent positive reviews as of Friday, according to the website RottenTomatoes.com.

New Line's launch of senior-citizen heist comedy "Going in Style" is following in fourth with about $12.1 million at 3,061 sites - well above recent expectations, which had forecast a quiet finish around $8 million. The faith-based drama, from Pure Flix Films, tells the real-life story of a self-avowed atheist and journalist who sets out to disprove his wife's newfound Christian faith.
