Charlie Murphy, 'Chappelle's Show' star and Eddie's brother

The Daughters hitmaker happened to be performing in Chappelle's home state of OH, and the funnyman made a decision to join his longtime friend John onstage in Columbus to celebrate his late collaborator's life.

Later, Murphy worked as head of security for his younger brother, the actor Eddie Murphy. Before the singer began to play Chappelle's song request, You're Gonna Live Forever In Me in Murphy's memory, the comedian issued a request: "Everybody with a cellphone, put it in your pocket".

"Our hearts are heavy with the loss today of our son, brother, father, uncle and friend Charlie", the family said Wednesday. Our prayers and condolences go out to the friends and family of Mr. Murphy.

"My good friend Charlie Murphy passed away this morning and everybody in company is heartbroken", he told the crowd. Decades later, he became best known for a part on Dave Chappelle's acclaimed sketch-comedy series "Chappelle's Show", on Comedy Central from 2003 to 2006. Some of his funniest sketches, called "Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories", depicted his encounters with famous people he met, like Prince.

It captures the essence of Charlie Murphy, a regular guy who constantly found himself in objectively insane situations without batting an eye, taking it all in.

In addition to his work with Chappelle, Murphy appeared in films such as CB4 and shows such as The Boondocks and Black Jesus.

"For me to start a comedy career after he established that was really a big risk", he said.

He also provided the voice of a dog in Eddie Murphy's film "Norbit" (2007), which he helped write.

He is credited with appearances to air later this year on the Starz TV drama series "Power".
