Two Police Officers in Gwinnett County, Georgia Fired After Beating Black Man

Cellphone video captured former Gwinnett County Officer Robert McDonald stomping on Hollins' head moments after 19-year veteran Sgt. Michael Bongiavonni was captured on a different video appearing to punch Hollins.

Eighty-nine criminal cases involving two Gwinnett County Police officers fired for abusing a man at a traffic stop have been tossed out by prosecutors.

FILE - In this Wednesday, April 12, 2017 file photo released by the Gwinnett County (Ga.) Sheriff's Office, Demetrius Bryan Hollins poses for a photograph after being arrested.

The officer said he remembered detaining Mr Hollins at a previous traffic stop and the man was allegedly found with a loaded gun, according to the CNN.

The video then shows both cops - who are white - holding the man down before hauling him into their waiting police auto. Gwinnett County police also called the video "very disturbing" and said it "confirmed that the force used was unnecessary and excessive".

Two videos circulating on social media showed a Georgia man being assaulted by two cops during a traffic stop this week, and now those cops have been fired, the AP reports.

"The revelations uncovered in this entire investigation are shocking", police said in the statement. Bongiovanni asked Hollins to get out of the vehicle and he resisted, the report said.

"In many cases, justice calls for a conscientious and thorough prosecution", Szabo said in a news release. The officer then rares back and punches and pummels the driver, whose hands remain upraised.

Gwinnett County authorities terminated McDonald Thursday afternoon for his actions.

Hollins' lawyer, Justin Miller, said the incident would likely have been gone unreported if it had not been caught on video. "However, we also believe that our decisive action in terminating both officers speaks volumes about what is expected of each officer that wears a Gwinnett County Police badge". There is no mention of Bongiovanni hitting Hollins.
