Two online petitions calling for Munoz to step down as CEO had more than 124,000 signatures combined by Wednesday afternoon.

"He can't be. He was a paying passenger sitting on our seat in our aircraft, and no one should be treated like that". United CEO Oscar Munoz has apologized for the incident, and he vowed Wednesday that it will never happen again.

In case you somehow missed it, passenger Dr. David Dao was forcibly removed from an overbooked United Airlines flight departing from Chicago on Sunday evening.

A Dao family member will speak on his behalf at Thursday's news conference in Chicago, along with members of the family's legal team.

Dao and his wife initially agreed to get off the plane, passenger Jayse Anspach said.

As The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Kentucky, reported Monday, airline passengers were told that the flight was overbooked.

The U.S. Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that it is reviewing Sunday's events to see if United violated rules on overselling flights.

Additionally, all passengers aboard that flight will get a full refund. He said Dao is not at fault, a change in tune from his initial comments on the matter.

The attorneys want cockpit voice recordings, passenger and employee and crew lists, incident reports and the city Aviation Department's personnel reports for the police who removed Dao from the plane.

The incident has reached Japan as well, where local airline officials told the Japan Times they would never resort to this type of violence or turn passengers away from flights without their consent.

The company plans to share results of the review by April 30. The request comes just days after the world witnessed that now viral video of a doctor being forcibly dragged off a plane in Chicago to make room for a flight crew trying to get to Louisville.

The video sparked national outrage and calls for congressional investigations.

Munoz's latest statement described the removal as "truly horrific".

Dao has not returned messages from the AP.

The flight was loaded and preparing to leave Chicago's O'Hare International Airport on Sunday when the man was dragged off. He was also sexually involved with a patient who used to work for his practice.
