Nintendo SNES Mini Version In The Works, Pre-Christmas Launch Expected

Nintendo recently revealed that the Nintendo NES Classic Mini will not be produced anymore.

It would be a real treat if this retro console re-release becomes an annual tradition from Nintendo. It's something I genuinely hope will happen, especially given that the Super Nintendo wasn't officially released here in South Africa.

A source of very close to the house of Kyoto has confirmed that Nintendo is now working on "Mini" version of the Super Nintendo, arriving in stores later this year, just in time for the holiday season. The system is said to be very similar to the NES Classic Edition: It would come with games built in and use a facsimile of the original SNES gamepad (seen above). The NES mini came with 30 titles.

Last week, research firm NPD Group and Nintendo said that it sold more than 906,000 Switch consoles in North America in March, making it Nintendo's best-selling launch ever. We only wish more people could have gotten one.

Eurogamer has reported that Nintendo will be releasing the SNES Mini later this year.

Some of the top SNES games that may be part of the console include A Link to the Past, Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario World, Super Metroid and Super Mario Kart.

Nintendo has been in the news a lot lately for its rather wacky decision to cancel the popular NES Classic Edition. It is now scheduled for a launch ahead of Christmas later this year.

One scenario often evoked is that the disappearance of the NES Mini is to make way for other memories consoles, including the Super Nintendo Classic Edition. If it comes out true, the SNES Mini will definitely follow the footsteps of the Nintendo NES Classic Mini. Now Nintendo has discontinued the NES Classic in Europe as well. The video game maker may be setting their sights on a sequel later this year.
