Whicker: Oilers' Adam Larsson too slick for Ducks

Whicker: Oilers' Adam Larsson too slick for Ducks

Edmonton won twice at the Honda Center to kick off the matchup.

Let's go to the tape.

The Ducks squandered a 3-2 lead to the Kings in the second round of the playoffs in 2014 en route to a 4-3 series defeat, and they did the same thing last season against the Nashville Predators in the opening round.

Andrej Sekera, an unsung defenceman whose stellar play has been overshadowed by first-liners Larsson and Oscar Klefbom, put Edmonton ahead only 1:05 into Friday's game. In Game 2, the Oilers scored two early goals, and despite giving up three penalties in the second and third combined, the Oilers held the lead to take a 2-0 series lead.

"It was just like the game was being played there", Bob Nicholson, the chief executive of the Oilers Entertainment Group, said Thursday about the fast ticket sales.

This was the first time that the Blues failed to score multiple goals in the playoffs, so the lack of offensive punch on Sunday shouldn't derail what they had going. Filip Forsberg added a power-play goal just four minutes later to restore the two-goal lead going to the third. The Ducks also hit multiple posts in Game 2, but nothing could get by Talbot, who made most of his tough saves well before the final eight minutes.

It was a far cry from Talbot's last visit to Orange County during the regular season on March 22.

Notes: Vatanen drew into Anaheim's lineup for the first time in the playoffs.

Cub Swanson out duels Artem Lobov, wants title shot
Lobov's best chance of causing an upset against the man ranked sixth in the featherweight division was to draw him into a scrap. While he did experience a two-fight skid in 2014 and 2015, he has gotten himself back on track with a four-fight win streak.

After two relatively high-scoring games on Wednesday, Thursday's series opener between the Senators and Rangers was a goalie showdown. After scoring 3 goals in the Flames series, Getzlaf has continued to play well with a goal and an assist against the Oilers.

"We had an opportunity to get up mid-series against San Jose, and we obviously didn't perform very well", McLellan said. "Even if he has an off night, we can always count on him to bounce back and be terrific and I think that speaks to his character and the kind of guy he is". Silfverberg also assisted on a Ryan Kesler goal for a three-point outing.

Anaheim outshot Edmonton 40-23, including 16 shots in the third period, but Talbot was the difference.

Talbot said those are the breaks that come when everything is going well for a goalie. "I was tracking the puck; I was controlling some rebounds where I needed to control them, and trying not to give them a lot of second chances, because that's where they thrive".

And the sound of a shot drawing iron certainly beats the alternative.

The Oilers return home after a pair wins in Anaheim leading the Western Conference Semifinals 2-0. For them to win in Game 3, the bulk of the load has to fall on Perry and the rest of the Ducks' goal scorers.

Need More winners against the spread?

Game three: Capitals at Penguins - Capitals coach Barry Trotz yanked goalie Braden Holtby in game two's blowout loss after the reigning Vezina Trophy victor surrendered his sixth goal of the series (he has faced just 35 shots).

Talbot's focus is on finishing off the Ducks. "I don't really like the attention so that's fine by me".
