Mr Trump has been critical of a deal struck with the Obama administration which would see up to 1,250 refugees to Australia resettled in the United States in exchange for Australia resettling refugees from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.

Rupert Murdoch will on Thursday (Friday AEST) introduce President Donald Trump at a dinner to honour Australian prime minister Malcolm Turnbull in NY, an event that marks an improvement in US-Australia relations after an earlier spat between the leaders.

Trump, who campaigned on tough-on-immigration policies, was enraged by the agreement, prompting a tense phone call with Turnbull and an angry tweet in which the president dubbed the deal "dumb".

The president last week on Fox News sought to explain why he had not been back to his home state.

"I have no doubt that the prime minister and President Trump will find a lot in common, I'm sure they'll get along well", she said, without elaborating on what talks would focus on.

Ms Bishop said the call, which Mr Trump described as the worst leader's call of the day, should not be overstated.

Australia's prime minister said Wednesday that he and U.S. President Donald Trump will engage as two seasoned businessmen-turned-politicians when they meet for the first time, focusing on North Korea, security and economic issues. A show of force is already a fixture at Trump Tower, where the Secret Service and heavily armed NYPD officers have used barricades, checkpoints and street closings to secure the iconic skyscraper where the president has a penthouse apartment.

Trump campaigned against immigration, including by Muslims, and was enraged by the agreement.

A White House official declined to discuss the president's travel plans, saying only that Trump was eager to return to the city.
