In 1982 the National Prayer Committee was formed to coordinate and implement a fixed annual day of prayer for the goal of organizing evangelical Christian prayer events with local, state, and federal government entities. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed a bill officially naming the first Thursday in May as a "National Day of Prayer".

Bristol, Tennessee resident Roz Thomas said the National Day of Prayer means having the freedom to come together and pray for the country.

"We really have a nice base of people who continue to come out each year and pray for our city and pray and for our nation", Baugher said.

"I prayed a lot about school and how God provides for me and my schooling because I'm in college and support myself and I prayed a lot about my friends", says Clara Smith.
