Diamondbacks' Iannetta hit in face with pitch, walks off

Diamondbacks pitcher Zack Greinke threw seven hitless innings before allowing a leadoff home run to Pirates outfielder Gregory Polanco in the eighth.

Iannetta remained on the ground for several minutes but eventually left the field under his own power.

The Diamondbacks had only thrown two no-hitters in their franchise's history, with Randy Johnson's ideal game for Arizona in 2004, and Edwin Jackson throwing a no-hitter in 2010.

Dallas Keuchel struck out nine Yankees batters over six innings of work, allowing one unearned run on five hits and lowering his ERA to 1.69.

Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Zack Greinke dominated the Pittsburgh Pirates with 11 strikeouts over eight innings of shutout ball in a 2-1 victory on Thursday.

"We preach being ready to be the guy to break the game open", Lovullo said.

Before the incident, Brandon Drury continued his torrid hitting at home with a three-hit night that included a three-run home run.

Pittsburgh's lineup was silent Wednesday until Francisco Cervelli hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to break up Los Angeles right-hander Kenta Maeda's shutout bid in Dodger Stadium.

Zee Entertainment Enterprises jumped 5.7% to 545.35 rupees, taking its two-day gains to almost 10%. Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.36 per cent, while Japan's Nikkei shed 0.26 per cent in early trade.

"There's a strategy to pitching in and there's a need for pitching in", Lovullo said, "and by no means do I think anybody tried to hit Chris Iannetta in the face yesterday". In 2014, Diamondbacks star Paul Goldschmidt was hit in the hand by a pitch and missed the rest of that season.

Goldschmidt suffered a broken wrist when he was struck by a pitch from Ernesto Frieri on August 1, 2014, and the D-Backs got McCutchen in the back in the ninth inning the next day, forcing him onto the disabled list.

Arizona's David Peralta doubled twice and made a diving grab in right field to rob Andrew McCutchen in the first inning. "When I say that, it sounds light because I have no idea what he felt".

"He wasn't able to get fastball execution". Only one batter has reached base for the Pirates through seven innings.

Drury also doubled and singled to improve his batting average at home to.448 (30 of 67), best in the majors. Arizona was in total control by the time Drury belted a towering shot into the left-field seats for a 7-1 lead.

Pittsburgh cut the lead to 7-3 thanks to Josh Bell's two-out, two-run home run in the top of the fourth. It was Iannetta's third home run of the season.

"That was scary", Pirates catcher Chris Stewart said.
