AAP to launch 'save democracy campaign' against EVM tampering: Rai

The Congress leader asserted that the poll panel should reconsider its opinion about the EVM.

An Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) delegation led by senior party leader Somnath Bharti on Thursday met Election Commission officials over the Electronic Voter Machine tampering matter.

Sacked Delhi water minister Kapil Mishra on Wednesday began his indefinite hunger strike at his residence and threatened not to eat anything till Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal reveals who funded foreign trips of five AAP leaders in the last two years.

He had used a lookalike machine and used some secret codes to show that EVMs can be tampered.

"Such so called demonstration on extraneous and duplicate gadgets which are not owned by the ECI can not be exploited to influence our intelligent citizens and electorate to assail or vilify the EVMs used by the Commission in its electoral process", it added. These opposition parties had also conveyed their concerns on the EVMs to President Pranab Mukherjee. "It is our constitutional and moral duty to stand dead centre of the circle drawn around us by 56 political parties (seven national and 49 state recognised parties)", he added.

It had chose to conduct the meeting to allay the concerns of various parties as they had made representations to it and also the President. "They won't let us access their machines and then challenge us to prove our charge of hacking".

Though many parties welcomed the Election Commission's assurance on the use of VVPATs, but AAP was adamant on its demand of Hackathon.

Batting for the implementation of the Ballot Paper system for conducting elections, the Congress on Friday said the Election Commission of India (ECI) should reconsider its opinion about the same.

RJD spokesperson Manoj Jha said by harping on the infallibility of EVMs, the EC was acting as the custodian of just the "instruments" and not the process as a whole.

Chief election commissioner Nasim Zaidi had said a "challenge" is on the cards, going on record for the first time regarding the EC's proposed move to counter allegations of EVM tampering.

They also opposed a proposal to allow EC countermand an election if large-scale use of money power to influence voters comes to light.
