UNSC to hold urgent consultations on NKorea missile test

North Korean state media said Monday that the missile Pyongyang test-fired on Sunday is a new weapon, able to carry a heavy nuclear warhead to unprecedented distances - possibly as far as US soil.

Amid condemnation in Seoul, Tokyo and Washington, a jubilant leader Kim Jong Un promised more nuclear and missile tests and warned that North Korean weapons could strike the US mainland and Pacific holdings.

SEOUL, Korea, Republic Of - North Korea's latest ballistic missile test may be almost as big a deal as its propaganda machine claims. Pyongyang's aggressive push to boost its weapons program also makes it one of the Trump administration's most urgent foreign policy worries, though Washington has struggled to settle on a policy.

North Korea previously launched a ballistic missile from Kusong in February. It said the newly developed Hwasong-12 flew as high as 2,111 kilometres (1,310 miles) before landing in a targeted area in the ocean about 787 kilometres (490 miles) from the launch site.

Gulp. Experts are calling the latest missile test in North Korea successful at "a level of performance never before seen from a North Korean missile". However, Russia said it fell 310 miles (500 kilometers) from its coast.

This range is considerably longer than the estimated range of the Musudan missile, which showed a range of about 3,000 km in a test previous year.

At a media briefing at its embassy in Beijing, North Korea's ambassador to China said the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency and South Korean National Intelligence Service conspired "secretly and meticulously" in hatching their plot to use "radioactive or nano-poisonous substances" to assassinate Kim. Hawaii is roughly 7,000 km from North Korea.

Haley said Russian Federation also is "concerned", especially since the missile hit relatively close to home.

"It appears to have not only demonstrated an intermediaterange ballistic missile that might enable them to reliably strike the USA base at Guam, but more importantly, may represent a substantial advance to developing an intercontinental ballistic missile".

The United Nations Security Council is due to meet on Tuesday to discuss North Korea's latest missile launch, diplomats said on Sunday.

-South Korea military drills, which Pyongyang says are a threat to its security. Moon has advocated dialogue with North Korea to denuclearize.

The 38 North analysis points out that the distance flown by the missile means it could strike a USA military base at Guam.

"If the U.S. awkwardly attempts to provoke the DPRK, it will not escape from the biggest disaster in the history, Kim said, strongly warning the United States should not to disregard or misjudge the reality that its mainland and Pacific operation region are in the DPRK's sighting range for strike and that it has all powerful means for retaliatory strike", KCNA said.

There's also a political victory for North Korea.

Rep. Park Byeong-seug of South Korea's ruling Democratic Party said he had a short conversation with Kim Yong-jae, Pyongyang's minister of external economic relations. He said Sunday's launch - the seventh such firing by North Korea this year - may have been of a new mobile, two-stage liquid-fueled missile North Korea displayed in a huge April 15 military parade.

North Korea has been a flagrant menace for far too long.

While Trump has said he'd be "honored" to talk with leader Kim under favorable conditions, Haley seemed to rule out the possibility.

"There are no excuses that justify N. Korea's actions", Nikki Haley, the USA ambassador to the United Nations, tweeted.
