Horschel's wife opens up on battle with alcoholism

His wife, Brittany, shed some light as to why the four-time PGA Tour victor felt so relieved to have something positive happen.

Billy Horschel paid tribute to his wife on Monday (Tuesday in Manila) as she revealed the personal anguish that lay behind the golfer's emotional reaction after his victory in the AT&T Byron Nelson USPGA event at the weekend.

"When I hit it I knew it was on a ideal line and I thought I got it to the hole".

"I've missed short putt not too long ago to lose a playoff". "I was expecting to go back to the tee and play the hole again".

Australian Day, the 2015 PGA Championship victor, missed a short putt on the 18th hole that would have extended the play-off to hand Horschel victory. "The journey is not over, it'll never be", he said. "I won, and I don't want to leave". He just missed a miraculous eagle at the 18th hole that would have gotten him in the playoff with his playing partners - threesomes were used after early morning rain delayed the start Sunday. When asked if he could explain why it was the most emotional, he responded: "I'm not able to talk about it right now". You really never know what is going on in someone's lives, and that has certainly been true this previous year for me.

Playing the role of pursuer for most of the final round, Horschel jarred an impressive 59-foot bomb on the 14th that moved him into a tie for the lead at 11 under.

According to Horschel, she spent the end of May through July last year in a treatment center, leaving Billy to take care of their one-year-old daughter. It was a shock miss from close range for Day, who had previously made 278 of 291 putts inside five feet (95.5 percent) this season.

"That's not the way I wanted to win it", said Horschel, 30. I didn't know what she meant.

Before this week, he had only made five cuts in his past 20 stars, but he rolled back the years at Verdura Golf Club as he came flying out of the blocks with four birdies in the first six holes - draining huge birdie putts at the fifth and sixth.
