South Korea fires warning shots at North Korea over 'unidentified flying object'

The attack came as tensions ran high between the two countries after North Korea held a ballistic missile test on Sunday, prompting strong condemnation from South Korea and the worldwide community, including China.

Seoul's military believe the uobject was launched from North Korea and local media has reported that it could have been a drone. An investigation by authorities concluded that the drones were part of the arms assigned to North Korea's borderline troops for reconnaissance activities. But US ambassador Nikki Haley said last week that no final draft text had been clinched. "We're working closely with other members".

On Sunday, the North test-fired a ballistic missile - the latest in a series of provocations - drawing fresh condemnation from the U.N. Security Council.

On Sunday Pyongyang conducted what it said was a successful test of a medium-range ballistic missile. The ground-to-ground missile reportedly flew some 500 kilometers (310 miles) before falling into the Sea of Japan short of reaching Japan's exclusive economic zone. North Korea is threatening a sixth nuclear test.

But Liu said China "first and foremost" wants to see the six sanctions resolutions against North Korea already adopted by the council fully implemented. "But meanwhile, we should also work to reduce tension, to de-escalate, and also to try to achieve denuclearization through dialogue by political and diplomatic means".

"We are talking with our friends - with the United States obviously, and ROK [South Korea], and with our close neighbors China and Russian Federation - in order to make sure that the pressure is still there, is continued and even strengthened, so that North Korea will change its policy", Bessho said. "Dialogue should take place because we can only resolve the issue through dialogue".

Tensions have increased in the region as Pyongyang continues to defy United Nations resolutions, and the U.S. has ramped up its anti-DPRK rhetoric following the inauguration of Donald Trump as USA president.

The 1994 energy-for-weapons agreement worked until the 9/11 terrorist attacks, after which U.S. President George W. Bush claimed that North Korea was part of a so-called axis of evil with Iraq and Iran.

"It is the United States' hostile policy and its aggressive joint military drills, nuclear threats and military build-up around the Korean peninsula that really aggravates the situation on the Korean peninsula and the region and which compels the DPRK to also up its nuclear deterrence", he said.
