French crew in first America's Cup win, USA beaten

The defending champions Oracle Team USA, who were not racing on Monday, are already assured of their place in the America's Cup next month but the real battle lies further down the six-team table with semi-final places up for grabs on Sunday.

The Swedish team made amends in their second race by ending the three-race winning run of Oracle Team USA with a convincing show of tactics and boat speed giving them victory by a 39-second margin after they took the lead from the start.

Land Rover BAR had a bad mark rounding halfway through the race and Groupama Team France went flying past and won by 53 seconds.

Struggling Land Rover BAR has three points, followed by Artemis, SoftBank Team Japan and Groupama Team France with two points apiece.

BAR lost both of their races to Team New Zealand and Team USA on the opening day in Bermuda, and copped a penalty for this misdemeanour. If Oracle wins the qualifiers, it will carry a one-point bonus into the first-of-seven America's Cup match beginning June 17.

"You need room coming in at 40 knots", Emirates Team New Zealand helmsman Peter Burling said.

Beating Artemis by three seconds “was really good for the team, ” Team France skipper Franck Cammas said.

"Clearly we're not fast enough upwind in certain conditions and we've got to improve that", Ainslie said.

Besides being top challengers, the Artemis and Team New Zealand sailors are familiar with one another. Artemis also was penalized for being over the start line early.

"It is just a shame we couldn't repay them in the races today".

Artemis will face Ainslie's Land Rover BAR in the third race scheduled.

There was no sign of the damage suffered by BAR yesterday and fears that they had re-damaged the hull against Team USA early on day two provide unfounded.

The Kiwis sacked skipper Dean Barker and replaced him with Burling.

Following the collision with Team Japan, Team BAR's boat came close to sinking after the hull lifted right out of the water and slammed into Japan's starboard hull during the pre-start.

Refusing to rest on their laurels, Emirates Team New Zealand eased over the finish line, one minute and 28 seconds ahead of Land Rover BAR to cap an impressive day on the water. "It didn't happen last night, so I'm guessing' he'll probably do it tonight".

"The boat seemed quick and I think we sailed okay but we got caught out by some needless mistakes which we need to address". Time to hunker down, regroup and come back fighting'.
