Tesla Model Y teased, will enter production in 2019-20

"I'm really excited about Model Y", Musk said, according to Inverse.

The automaker's shares are trading at record levels, and it has surpassed General Motors and Ford in market value. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has apparently said the Model Y won't be released until at least 2019, or maybe 2020, so there could be potential for the laws to be changed by then to accept the proposal. Above is our first look at its latest model - a smaller sibling to the Model X SUV, which will be dubbed the Model Y. The California-based electric vehicle manufacturer has divulged some details to accompany the cryptic picture, too.

Also giving Tesla's stock a boost was news that Nevada regulators passed a bill to restore net metering for rooftop solar sales.

Here's the initial picture that appeared behind Musk during his presentation to the shareholders.

The chances for flubbing that with the Model 3 are especially high due to strong demand for the new vehicle.

Tesla is looking at automating most of the production process for the Model Y. Musk added that a new factory would produce the Model Y while the Gigafactory One will produce only the battery packs.

Tesla recently affirmed that its Model 3 production is on track to begin in July at its Fremont, Calif., assembly plant, but plenty of execution risks remain. The company said that it would increase the number of stores and service centres by 30 per cent this year, but at the start of 2017 it had just 250 worldwide.

Of course, the USA remains Tesla's most important market in term of total sales, but it's not impossible that it could change in the near future now that China is both the biggest auto market in the world and the biggest market for electric vehicles. What this means exactly no one can be sure, but more details will be revealed in September alongside Tesla's planned launch of its electric lorry. To achieve the 500,000 units per year target for 2018, Tesla needs to simplify things a little.

Billionaire Elon Musk's Q&A sessions are traditionally the most entertaining part of Tesla's annual shareholders meeting, and this year's appearance did not disappoint.
