Hawaii Signs Legislation To Implement Goals Of Paris Climate Accord Anyway

A new law in Hawaii formally aligns the state with the greenhouse gas reduction goals of the Paris climate change agreement.

The mayors of Pittsburgh and Paris have united in voicing their support for the Paris Agreement after President Donald Trump invoked the two cities while discussing his reasons for pulling out of the accord.

David Ige signed two bills yesterday (June 6) to enforce parts of the Paris Agreement-making Hawaii the first state to take concrete action in support of the global climate agreement.

"The selfish act of the USA does not only have grave consequences for the worldwide efforts to protect the environment, but poses great danger to other areas as well", the spokesman said. "Tides are getting higher, biodiversity is shrinking, coral is bleaching, coastlines are eroding, weather is becoming more extreme". "Together, we can directly contribute to the global agenda of achieving a more resilient and sustainable island Earth", Ige said in a statement". Ige also signed House Bill 1578, which aims to "identify agricultural and aquacultural practices to improve soil health and promote carbon sequestration - the capture and long-term storage of atmospheric carbon dioxide to mitigate climate change".

It also creates a commission to establish strategies to combat climate change and develop plans to manage the impact of rising sea levels.

Dozens of mayors across the U.S. have also committed themselves to meeting the terms of the agreement. While Trump's withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement can't be completed until 2020, he has said his administration will "cease all implementation" of the accord effective immediately.
