Both the leaders, it was learnt, asked the BJP to first decide its Presidential nominee before the two parties take a decision on whether or not to support.

The NDA needs around 20,000 more votes to ensure victory of its candidate and the reach out to the opposition is seen as an exercise to test if there could be a consensus and ensure a greater margin of victory.

The Board formed a three-man panel - comprising senior ministers Rajnath Singh, Venkaiah Naidu and Arun Jaitley - to select their presidential nominee. Nomination form of the candidate is to be signed by at least 50 electors as proposers and 50 as seconders for each set.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) issued the notification in this regard and the process of the nomination has started that will continue till June 28.

Many leaders indicated that the July 17 election will not go unopposed in view of the "betrayal" by the BJP. This stand could spoil chances of the likes of MS Swaminathan, as suggested by the Shiv Sena, and "Metro Man" E Sreedharan.

"We now hope that they don't have any reason to oppose Kovind's candidature because of his background, his non-controversial nature and social background", Naidu said.
