Sears Closing Another 20 Stores

It is important to note that last month Sears Holdings reported sales dropping by almost 12% at stores open at least a year in the first there months, doing considerably worse than other retailers.

The Sears department store at the Westfield Shopping Center in Sarasota, located at 8201 S Tamiami Trail, is closing its doors for good.

It will remain open as Sears Canada Group closes down 59 of its 225 stores across the country.

The company will shutter 18 Sears stores and two Kmart locations, real estate investment trust Seritage Growth Properties confirmed in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing.

Both stores will close in mid-September while the auto center will close in late July, he said. Its Sears Home Store, on Legacy Drive, will be shuttered, but its Devonshire Mall department store will continue to operate.

The published list doesn't include area locations in the Holyoke Mall, the Berkshire Mall in Lanesborough and the Eastfield Mall in Springfield, or the Kmart locations in Holyoke, Springfield and Palmer.

On Thursday, Sears Canada, a separate company that Sears spun off in 2012, filed for bankruptcy protection.

The final closure date in the Sault hasn't been determined, but a corporate spokesperson said plans are in place to help employees here with resumes and make contacts with other retailers "during liquidation".

Sears Canada operates as a licensee of US -based Sears Holdings, although Sears Holdings owns about 11.7% of Sears Canada stock.
