WannaCry Ransomware: Traffic Cameras In Australia Hit By Virus

Victorian Police have cancelled 590 speeding and red-light fines despite the belief they were correctly issued.

As I described on the Tripwire blog earlier this week, it was recently discovered that 55 traffic and speed cameras in the state were accidentally infected with the WannaCry ransomware.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Ross Guenther told reporters on Friday the fines were issue mainly for speed and red light offences from the 55 faulty cameras.

However 3AW later reported the ransomware had been introduced into the camera system by "human error", and said the Justice Department was in the process of removing it from affected machines.

The cameras, majority in inner-city Melbourne, issued 590 speed and red-light fines during that time.

Tech workers at the police became suspicious last week, after they began to notice the speed cameras rebooting themselves more often than usual.

Just over a month ago, a nasty piece of ransomware called "WannaCry" began infecting PCs all across the world at an alarming rate.

An inquiry into the incident will be launched on Monday, and meetings will be held with the state's sheriff, traffic camera commissioner, and the assistant police commissioner of road policing.

"These cameras are about saving lives; those cameras are still operating".
