Top US, Russian diplomats to meet in Hamburg

The cease-fire will go into effect Sunday at noon Damascus time, officials told the Associated Press.

The recent round of talks on the Syrian conflict in Kazakhstan's capital, Astana, centered on seven new documents on de-escalation zones and other mechanisms aimed at bringing peace to the war-torn country.

It is unclear how this cease-fire would affect US and coalition combat against ISIS as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, particularly the crucial siege now underway against the jihadis' last major stronghold of Raqqa, in the north.

Friday's deal could help the Trump administration retain more of a say over who fills the power vacuum left behind as the Islamic State is routed from additional territory in Syria.

How he leaves could be determined later, the political process should include a transition away from the Assad family, he added. Russian Federation is providing large amounts of assistance to Assad's Army and holds the reins over whether Assad steps down.

Lavrentyev said ahead of the talks that he planned to meet with opposition delegates attending the session and hear "what they think about how to reach an agreement" with Assad and "how to reduce tensions".

Israel has also struck Syrian military installations on several occasions in the past few weeks after shells landed into the Israeli-controlled side of the Golan Heights Golan Heights.
