Trump 'absolutely' still wants Mexico to pay for border wall

President Donald Trump isn't backing down from his assertion that Mexico should pay for the border wall that he's pushing to build along the United States' southern border.

Following a meeting between Trump and President Enrique Peña Nieto on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany, the former was asked by reporters if he still expected Mexico to pay for the border wall, a key platform of his election campaign a year ago. One topic not on the agenda at the encounter in Hamburg is Trump's pledge to build a wall on the U.S. -Mexico border, Videgaray said in an earlier television interview.

The two presidents were holding their first in-person bilateral meeting since Trump took office in January after a first meeting was scrapped over tensions about payment of Trump's proposed border wall.

Immigration chatter aside, Trump and Nieto reportedly had a productive meeting Friday, especially in regards to their discussions on NAFTA.

The Trump administration formally told Congress in May that it intends to renegotiate NAFTA with Canada and Mexico.

Some Democrats have said outlays for the wall will be a dealbreaker in future budget talks.

He said of Trump's comments: "I didn't hear it. Pena also didn't hear it". Trump reportedly referred to Nieto as his "friend" and said the pair was making "very good progress" on discussions of transnational issues like the NAFTA negotiations.

The longer-than-scheduled meeting comes as U.S. officials say the United States and Russian Federation have reached an agreement for a cease-fire in southwest Syria that is set to take effect on Sunday. "And we think there is a lot of room to make it a better agreement for the three nations".

"That subject was not part of the conversation", he said.

The two presidents spoke behind closed doors for about 30 minutes after delivering statements to the press. Pena Nieto's spokesman Eduardo Sanchez called in to Mexican broadcaster Radio Formula from Hamburg, stating that the two presidents did not discuss the wall.
