A representative for the studio told Muppets fan site Tough Pigs: "Steve Whitmire is no longer working with the Muppets".

Vogel took over voicing the Count when "Sesame Street" regular Jerry Nelson died in 2012 and soon took over many of Nelson's characters. Matt Vogel will become the new permanent puppeteer, having worked with the Jim Henson Company since the 1990s. "We will be seeing Matt's first footage as Kermit in a "Muppets Thought of the Week" video next week".

Whitmire has been in control of Kermit since the 1990s, following the death of Muppets creator Jim Henson. Some of his other favorites include Statler, Beaker, and Rizzo the Rat (which he originated).

ABC News and The Hollywood Reporter report that Steve Whitmire has left his role giving life to the iconic green Muppet.

The longtime puppeteer and voice of Kermit the Frog is moving on from The Muppets. Moreover, he appeared in Henson movie projects as The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. According to a tweet, Steve performed for Jane Henson at an airport coffee shop. The Muppets Studio declined comment on the reasons for his departure. The news has only recently been confirmed with Disney by ToughPigs.

Vogel joined Sesame Street in 1996 and voiced Kermit's evil doppelganger Constantine in the 2014 Muppets Most Wanted film.
