The Hyperloop Completed an IRL Test Run ... Sort Of

The startup said the privately conducted full systems test happened on May 12, 2017, and a spokesperson for the company told Ars that test results are being reported now because Hyperloop One is ending Phase 1 of testing and entering Phase 2, where the prototype vehicle will be pushed to 250 miles per hour.

To avoid issues related to high-speed travel (such as friction and air resistance) Musk's idea is loosely based on pneumatic tubes, where cylindrical containers are propelled through a network of tubes by compressed air or by partial vacuum, and commonly used by banks to transport money. While it has still got considerable work to do before it fires passenger pods through tubes at supersonic speeds, it was able to levitate the moving test vehicle over the track in what it describes as its "Kitty Hawk" moment.

"Hyperloop One has accomplished what no one has done before by successfully testing the first full scale Hyperloop system", said Shervin Pishevar, co-founder and chair of Hyperloop One, said in a statement.

"For the first time in over 100 years, a new mode of transportation has been introduced", said Pishevar.

Merkel stands by suggestion Europe can't rely fully on US
German authorities believe around 8,000 demonstrators were prepared to use violence, the interior minister said on Tuesday. German authorities are bracing for trouble in Hamburg as they are anxious that the protests could turn violent.

US Marine Corps Aircraft Crashes In Mississippi, Leaving 16 Dead
Sarah Burns said in a statement that a Marine KC-130 " experienced a mishap " Monday evening but provided no further details. The Marine Corps, which said it operated the plane, originally announced the crash via Twitter at about 8:30 p.m.

Tillerson talks tough on Russian Federation , vows United States support for Ukraine
Under the Obama administration, the US had taken a hands-off approach to Minsk, allowing the Europeans to take the lead. Poroshenko hailed U.S. involvement and reiterated Tillerson's commitment to seeking a negotiated peace deal.

Josh Giegel, the co-founder of Hyperloop One, said: "We're looking forward to showcasing our technology and believe that Europe is the ideal region for one of the world's first Hyperloop systems". "Hyperloop is real, and it's here now". The next phase of testing, Verge reports, aims to reach speeds of 250 m.p.h.

That brings us to today's announcement: A video of the first full-scale test of the technology in a vacuum tube, which took place out in the Nevada desert. Its created to carry both cargo and human passengers, Hyperloop One says. Made of structural aluminum and a lightweight carbon fiber, the shell measures 28 feet long.

The "Vision for America" includes connecting 35 cities nationwide with Hyperloop systems. Musk didn't have the bandwidth to take on the project - apparently getting the world off fossil fuels and colonizing Mars is time consuming - but he thought it'd be a faster and cheaper alternative to California's high-speed rail project.

Hyperloop One's main competitor Hyperloop Transportation Technologies also has its own 200-mile Hyperloop being built in South Korea.
