North Korea threatens UN

Here are four new key findings from Pew Research Center about views of North Korea and its nuclear program, based on a survey conducted in the USA and six Asia-Pacific countries between February and May.

In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang reiterated China's opposition to unilateral sanctions outside the framework of the United Nations and that China has been fully enforcing UN resolutions.

China has seriously carried out United Nations sanctions on North Korea, said Huang. However in February China said it would halt purchases until the end of the year, in compliance with Security Council resolutions over the North's nuclear program.

"Trade between China and North Korea grew nearly 40 percent in the first quarter", Trump tweeted on July 5.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said China's cooperation on North Korea was "uneven" when he spoke to lawmakers last month, saying US officials were concerned about actions by both the government and other entities in China. Last year, sales of coal accounted for more than 50 percent of North Korean exports to China and about a fifth of the country's total trade.

The Chinese customs department released figures showing a 29 percent spike in Chinese exports to North Korea.

Many people in Asia-Pacific countries have negative views of North Korea. The North is already accelerating its development of nuclear weapons despite universal opposition from the global community, and disagreements among UNSC member countries gives North Korea more time to further develop its nuclear capabilities. The officials declined to name the target but said larger Chinese banks will remain untouched for now. But it is especially anxious about the collapse of the regime with which it shares a border, and fears both an influx of millions of North Korean refugees and the possibility of a unified Korea with USA troops again at the Yalu River.

The gap in opinion between the major powers concerning North Korea's launch was also prominent during the G20 summit. Exports to China have moved within a relatively narrow range, reaching 3 million metric tons in 2013 and falling to 1.6 million tons a year ago. "In terms of economic significance today, it's been reduced to nothing".

The U.N. sanctions do not include goods intended for ordinary people and those for humanitarian reasons. Given their proximity to that market, North Koreans can make money without having to be as efficient as industry leaders, said BMI's Chowdhury.
